How it ended

CHELMSFORD — A massive fire broke out in a vacant building off Princeton Street in North Chelmsford near the Lowell line Wednesday night about 10:30, sending flames shooting into the night sky that were visible from as far away as Lowell’s Upper Highlands.

There were no immediate reports of injuries and the cause was not known early Thursday, but the state Fire Marshal’s Office was called to help Chelmsford firefighters with their investigation.

The building at 1100 Princeton St., which can’t be seen from the main road due to a wooded area between it and the road, is owned by UMass Lowell as part of its former West Campus. UML police responded to the scene Wednesday night. (Photo and story by Robert Mills )
